About regenerative medicine

On the other hand, ES cells and iPS cells, also called “pluripotent stem cells,” have the ability to produce various tissues and cells; ES cells can be generated by culturing fertilized eggs, while iPS cells are stem cells artificially generated from body cells. In 2012, Shinya Yamanaka of Kyoto University, credited with the original development of iPS cells, was awarded the Nobel Prize in recognition of his achievements. In addition, in 2014, the world’s first retinal transplant surgery using tissues made from iPS cells was performed experimentally, and it is expected that the techniques will be applied to a wide range of treatments in the future, but it will take some time for such treatments to be realized.
